A Brief History of Mebane First Baptist Church
Over One Hundred years ago a small group of Christians had a vision, and Mebane First Baptist Church is the result of that vision.
Among these pioneers with a vision were Rev. Carr Hughes, Alex Tinnin, Patience Tinnin, Callie Evans, Rosa Evans, Albert Strayhorn, Maggie Strayhorn, William Wade, Martha Wade, Samuel Smith, Sarah Smith, Eliza Holt, and John Cane. The group was released in good standings from Mt. Moriah by the pastor Rev. J.H. Dunston.
Rev. Matthew Brown of Apex, NC was called as pastor. In 1907 the church joined the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association
By 1919, the church building was enlarged to twice the original size. In 1940, a new brick structure was built on Lane Street and became a stationed church in 1949.
In 1950, the church purchased a dwelling house on Hawfield Road to be used as a parsonage. Then in 1961 with Rev. L.T. Daye as pastor, a new parsonage was built on Lane Street.
In 1975, under the leadership of Reverend John E. Davis, the church completed a two story educational building with a fellowship hall and classrooms.
Rev. Barry Morrow served five years as an associate minister under the tutelage of the late Rev. John E. Davis. Rev. Morrow served three months as Interim Pastor during the last quarter of 2009.
On April 11, 2010, Reverend Barry Morrow was officially installed as Pastor of Mebane First Baptist Church.
During Reverend Morrow’s tenure the sanctuary was completed renovated. We began the annual Christmas benefit concert jointly with local area churches to reach out to those in need during the holiday season. We completed the installation of a lighted industrial church sign. The church began the annual Gospel Explosion to provide financial scholarships for students and benevolence needs. The church established a joint ministry with First Baptist Church or Puerto Plata and Pastor Daniel Sánchez Reyes of the Dominican Republic to minister to those in need. The church repaired the roof and replaced the shingles of the parsonage.
God has blessed Mebane First Baptist with a rich heritage in the deep things of God. We praise Him for what He has done and pray that He will be honored and glorified in the years ahead. We thank God for bringing us thus far, and we thank our pastor, members, and friends for their help and support.
A house divided against itself cannot stand. We are proud to say Mebane First Baptist has stood over one hundred years.
